Darlene has held key positions on executive educational boards, long standing civil rights boards, and most recently was sworn in as one of the Board of Trustees for the Barack Obama Green Charter School.

The Forewords are penned by Fashion Guru & Best Selling Author, Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily and author & actress, BernNadette Stanis, America’s Sweetheart, Thelma Evans, from the 70’s Sitcom, Good Times, respectively. 

Darlene is also the author of an interactive personal development & anti-bullying book for girls, How to be a Young Lady: Your Total Guide for Being the Best Possible You! 2nd Edition. Her book assists girls with essentials such as necessary deportment skills, The Inner Beauty Pledge ™, talks to them about finances (Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche) and styling their clothes by celebrity fashion stylist and FIT Professor, Carlton Spence. The 3rd edition, which is due out fall 2023 brings readers up-to-date with the information about the aforementioned topics. Included in the upcoming edition is a chapter by a phenomenal psychologist. This book is recommended for girls ages eight to 18 and the parents/guardians and people who love them.

As a proponent of natural health, Darlene has been a vegan vegetarian for almost two decades. She is a student of Dr. Sebi, Queen Afua, and Dr. Gary Null. Her study of herbs has been the catalyst for her beginning her line of fine quality herbal capsules, teas, and healing potions. WHAT I BELIEVE

I am a firm believer in learning and pursuing your dash and then dash to fully live your best life.  Service is the rent that you pay for living on earth and do so in the manner that God created specifically for you as this is what leads to fulfillment. Fulfillment for both yourself and others - Quid Pro Quo or no deal. Life is too short to be taking unnecessary shorts. Grow from life’s challenges, relationships, and opportunities. When life knocks you down, brush yourself off and get back into the game and this time go harder because you’re more experienced and prepared. Failure is when you don’t even try. If you’re on God’s team, in the end you win. If you’re not winning right now, it’s not the end, so keep plugging at it, even if you don’t see the stairs, still keep climbing, you’ll be sorry if you don’t. If the manner in which you’re attempting to accomplish your goal is not working - STOP - start over and in another direction, using another method. Study successful people. People are not successful just because they have money. If money is all they have, then they’re broke. Focus on one thing and be exceptional at it before moving on to something else. Be authentic. Choose happiness, don’t wait for it to choose you. Smile, especially in front of those you know despise you, in fact, smile harder when they’re around, it’ll make you feel better and it will confuse the hell out of them. Always seek to be grateful, especially if you have your health and strength. Never ever walk in fear of anything or anyone. Spend the most time honoring GOD, enjoying family (family are not necessarily kin folk) and friends, and enjoying life on your terms, while doing no harm to others and protecting your peace, at all cost.

MY STORY

I remember growing up and being the tallest overweight girl in class. So much so that in third grade, I was taller than my teacher. Since I sat in the front because, during those days, students sat in alphabetical order, I was always teased. As a result of being bullied, I also became a bully. What I didn’t know at the time was that in both roles, the common denominator was low self-esteem. What is even sadder is that my parents encouraged the bullying unbeknownst to them. They were firm believers in don’t hit anyone and do not let anyone hit you and if they do, whoop their blankety blank blank! If you don’t, you’re gonna get your blankety blank blank whooped. So, since I was more afraid of not pleasing them than anyone or anything, I put in work for me and for my baby brother. I became a fierce protector and would rip “ish” up if I even thought someone was looking at him wrong. I have come to learn that there are other ways to get your point across without bullying nor allowing others to bully me. It was a lot of work, but worth it. The difference, now, is I can identify the triggers and control them. I’ve also come to learn that just because you can “tear” someone up, you do not have to, there in lies the real strength - the strength of restraint.

I know what it feels like to be bullied and to bully. I know what it feels like to walk in so much fear that you believe that you have to always act a certain way just to please people because they have come to know you to be a certain way. I’m here to tell you that nothing is more freeing than when you learn that change is the only constant and if you’re not changing you’re the living dead, just waiting for the physical cessation of life. What a horrible existence! I now live my dash unapologetically and with the utmost audacity! Those who disagree are not my people and I am fine with that regardless of their titles. I know that it’s easier said than done, but it is doable and freeing!

My epiphany is what made me change my life and it is what helps me help others. I have had plenty of amazing occupations, but most were not fulfilling. I am now passionate and unstoppable and I can show you how to navigate from fear to faithfulness and success.  Be intentional!

THE HUGE DIFFERENCE

Darlene has been acknowledged as a unique and distinctive authority in the fields of preeminence, personal & professional development. She has been recognized by the WNBA, twice in Long Island Business News as one of the Top 50 Women in Business, nominated for the John C. Maxwell Leadership Award, received recognition from County Executives, Mayors, Sororities, Fraternities, and others. 

Darlene was instrumental in advocating to save the Long Island estate of the late John Coltrane, was involved in the fight for having Dr. Booker T. Washington’s summer Long Island home preserved as a historical site, served as the co-facilitator of a cultural program in Ghana, West Africa with the late Jerry Rawlings, former President of Ghana, served on the board of the Long Island Women’s Institute under the late Dr. Rosalyn Muraskin, (her mentor), developed an introductory juvenile justice curriculum at a Brooklyn college, spearheaded a national scholarship pageant for African American college aged women that was recognized by former Mayor Kasim Reed, curated performances held at NJPAC, and served as the personal development instructor for the Alvin Ailey Summer Program.  

Her principles and practices are what sets her apart and makes the difference between mediocrity and higher level success.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Since the age of 14, Darlene has been a community servant. She was a cheerleading coach for the Police Athletic League. Since then she has volunteered to help women inmates learn how to read, she has curated major voter registration drives where she has garnered close to 8k new voter registrants at venues such as the Nassau Coliseum in New York. She has served to assist homeless people at the Bowery Mission in NYC, as well as served with her husband for annual turkey, toy, and coat drives. Additionally, she is a part of her husband’s campaign to denounce gang violence and his company, A Father’s Love has managed to bring two renowned rival gangs together to publicly declare peace.

Darlene has served to feed disenfranchised people with her Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., as well as has served in key positions in chapters of which she has been a member.

As the former first Black Woman President of a Long Island Rotary Club, Darlene was able to, via the Rotary’s signature program, Gift of Life, host an Ecuadorian boy and his mother as the little boy had heart surgery, which was donated by Stony Brook University Hospital medical doctors. Three days after his surgery, he began to grow and regained his appetite. Darlene and the Rotary Club ensured that this little boy would have a chance at life by having a water filtration system placed in the boy’s home.

In her position as president of the Rotary Club, she hosted youth literacy programs with Clifford the Big Red dog, where they donated hundreds of English/Spanish dictionaries to local communities. She also partnered with the local Lions Club to host youth basketball tournaments.

Darlene has also served on the Drama and website ministries at her church, Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, NY under the tutelage of Dr. A.R. & Karen Bernard.
